MELAMINE

Is Melamine just a different rat POISON?

According to the article in the Tribune-Review,

Aminopterin, (chemotherapy drug & rat poison)

was NOT found in the FDA's testing of the recalled menu's pet food

" ... The FDA has not determined how melamine got into the pet food. Melamine is used as a fertilizer in Asia and has several commercial and industrial uses ...

However, the FDA's testing DID find a CHEMICAL which gives me concern:

MELAMINE : Pesticide (as in RAT POISON) /Insecticide / Herbicide / Microbiocide

Chemical Name: Melamine

"This chemical [Melamine ] is listed as 'Not Registered' because it has not been specifically allowed and there are no registered products that contain this chemical."

Chemical Classification: Triazine

“Typically herbicides or microbiocides containing a triazine ring.

Melamine is manufactured by mixing urea with formaldehyde under heat and pressure….”

Other Names for MELAMINE:

"...  CYROMAZINE BREAKDOWN PRODUCT ..."

02284 (CA DPR Chem Code) , 1,3,5-Triazine-2,4,6-triamine , 108-78-1 (CAS Number) , 108781 (CAS Number) , 2,4,6-triamino-1,3,5-triazine , 2,4,6-triamino-s-triazine , 2284 (CA DPR Chem Code) , 777201 (US EPA PC Code) , Cyanuramide , Cymel , Cyromazine breakdown product , Melamine , S-triaminotriazine , Tiaminotriazine

Breakdown Product:

"The chemical transformation product resulting from metabolism of a pesticide in a biological system or from reaction of a pesticide with oxygen, water, light or other substances in the environment. In the PAN database, known breakdown products are listed as related chemicals for the parent pesticide (see Related Chemicals section at the bottom of the Chemical Information page); however, it is important to note that not all pesticide transformation products have been identified. Breakdown products can sometimes be more toxic than the starting pesticide."

‘Parent’ Chemical of MELAMINE is Cyromazine

Cyromazine is an INSECTICIDE / [PESTICIDE]

It is the "PARENT  CHEMICAL" OF MELAMINE

Cyromazine is a Triazine compound.

Symptoms of Poisoning with Triazine Compounds

MELAMINE  is the "Breakdown product"

"Breakdown products "can sometimes be MORE TOXIC than the starting pesticide."

(see above for reference.)

Acute systemic toxicity is unlikely unless large amounts have been ingested.

Cyromazine  is  a PAN Bad Actor

Pesticide Action Network North America

[emphasis mine]

“Pesticide Action Network (PAN) Bad Actor Pesticides:

… PESTICIDES WITH HIGH ACUTE TOXICITY ...

Known or probable CARCINOGENS ...

Reproductive or developmental TOXICANTS...

NEUROTOXIC cholinesterase inhibitors ...

Known groundwater CONTAMINANTS ...”

Cyromazine is an insecticide

"...   Red blood cell counts and haemoglobin levels were reduced in male dogs

at 3000 ppm.  There was a slight increase in the number of females

with mammary gland adenocarcinomas in the high dose group (3000 ppm)

in both mice and rats. ..."

"...  aware of toxicological data on melamine, notably

the National Toxicology Program (USA) carcinogenesis bioassays on mice

and rats.  The observation of bladder tumours in the rats in one of

these studies was related to the formation of bladder stones when the

rats were given high doses of melamine."
